 How to set an Internet & E-mail Access ?
The information in this article applies to: HP Jornada 710, 720, and 728 containing instructions on connecting to the Internet and setting up e-mail access.

The user names and ID's given in the following set up procedure are examples only and must be replaced with the actual users own settings. If the user has any doubts as to what their actual details are, they must contact their Internet Service Provider directly to obtain them.

Guidelines
  • Text enclosed in single brackets, e.g. [Start], indicates the relevant button or icon
  • Dialog box prompts are shown in single quotation marks, e.g. 'Select a modem:'
  • Correct text entries shown in chevrons, e.g. < UKOnline >
  • To ensure that your machine is optimally configured for the instructions below, please close down all programs on the unit before commencing
    (see User Guide for further information)

A) Preparing the Palmtop for Dialling
  1. Click [START] [SETTINGS] [Control Panel]
  2. Double-click [Dialling]
  3. Change the option ‘When dialling from:’ to 'Home' (normal dialling circumstances)
    - In the box 'The local area code is:', delete the entry there and leave it blank
    - In the box 'The local country code is:', delete the entry and type in <
    44 >
    - Ensure that 'Dial using:' is set to 'Tone'
    - Click
    [Dialling Patterns...]
    - In the box 'For Local calls, dial:', delete the entry and type in < G >
    - In the box 'For Long Distance calls, dial:', delete the entry and type in <
    0FG >
      (where 0 = zero)
    - In the box 'For International calls, dial:', delete the entry and type in <
    00EFG >
      (where 0 = zero)
    - Click
    [OK] (at the top of the screen)
  4. Click [OK] (at the top of the screen)
  5. Close Control Panel (X at the top of the screen)

B) Creating a Dial-Up Connection

  1. Click [START] [PROGRAMS] [COMMUNICATION] [Remote Networking]
  2. Double-click [Make New Connection]
  3. In the box 'Type a name for the connection:', delete the entry and type in the Service Provider's name (Ref A)
  4. Select the option 'Dial-Up Connection'
  5. Click [Next]
  6. In the box 'Select a modem:', choose the modem you wish to use
    - When using the internal modem, select the option ‘Built-In Modem’ – or similar -
      from the drop-down menu
    - If you are using a 3rd-party modem, it's name should be present in the
      drop-down menu
    - For infrared connection, use the phone manufacturers option in the drop-down
      menu list
  7. Click [Configure…]
  8. In the box 'Baud Rate', use the drop-down menu and change the option to '115200'
  9. Click [OK]
  10. Click [Next]
  11. In the box 'Country', type the entry < 44 >
  12. In the box 'Area', type the area code of the internet service provider, minus the leading zero (e.g. if the area code is 0845, type < 845 >) (Ref B)
  13. In the box 'Telephone number:', type the phone number of the internet service provider (e.g. < 3331121 >) (Ref B)
  14. Click [Finish]

C) Testing The Dial-Up Connection

- Ensure that the machine is plugged into a standard analogue phone line. 
- If you are using a mobile phone with an infrared connection, ensure that the phone has
  “data-services” enabled (contact your phone supplier for further information), and that
  the infrared port has been activated.

  1. Double-click the icon labelled with the Service Provider’s name (Ref A)
  2. In the box 'User name:', type your username (Ref C)
  3. In the box 'Password:', type your password (Ref D)
  4. In the box 'Domain:', type nothing (i.e. leave it blank!)
  5. Place a tick in the box 'Save password' (so it does not prompt you to enter it again)
  6. Ensure that the option 'Phone:' reads the correct number so you can dial out
    (e.g. T08453331121 - T is for Tone dialling)
  7. Click [Connect]
  8. A window will now appear indicating the status of the connection, with two buttons indicating [Hide] and [Cancel]. If the connection completes successfully, the message ‘Connected’ will appear and the two buttons will change to [Hide] and [Disconnect] (if the boxes appear differently, or you get an on-screen error message, please contact HP Technical Support on 0870 608 3003 for further information)
  9. Click [Disconnect] to cancel the connection
  10. Close Remote Networking (X at the top of the screen)

D) Setting Up Internet Explorer

  1. Double-click the icon 'Internet Explorer'
  2. Click [View] [Internet Options]
  3. Click [Connections]
  4. Place a tick in the box 'Use AutoDial'
  5. In the box 'Choose the Dial Up network connection used to dial the Internet', change the option to the name you created above (Ref A)
  6. Ensure that the box 'Use Proxy Server' is un-ticked
  7. Click [OK]
  8. Close Internet Explorer (X at the top of the screen)

E) Setting Up Inbox

  1. Double-click the icon 'Inbox'
  2. Click [Services] [Options…]
  3. Click [Add...]
  4. In the box 'Service type:', use the drop-down menu and change the option to 'POP3 Mail'
  5. In the box 'Service name:', type in the same name you inputted above (Ref A)
  6. Click [OK]
  7. In the box 'Connection:', change the option to the name you created above
    (Ref A)
  8. In the box 'POP3 Host:', type the name of your internet service providers' POP3 server (Ref E)
  9. In the box 'User ID:', type your username (Ref C)
  10. In the box 'Password:', type your password (Ref D)
  11. Place a tick in the box 'Save password' (so it does not prompt you to enter it again)
  12. In the box 'Domain (Windows NT):', type nothing (i.e. leave it blank!)
  13. In the box 'SMTP host for sending mail:', type the name of your internet service providers' SMTP address (Ref F)
  14. In the box 'Return address:', type in your full e-mail address (Ref G)
  15. Click [Next]
  16. Place a tick in the box 'Disconnect service after actions are performed' (this means that you can create all mail whilst off-line (not connected to the internet), and when you connect, it sends your out-going mail, picks up your incoming mail, then disconnects you again)
  17. Remove the tick from the box 'Only display messages from the last 3 days'
    (so the palmtop will view all mail messages sent to you account)
  18. Click [Next]
  19. Select the option 'Get full copy of messages' (so it picks up all the text the message)
  20. If you receive meeting requests (from Microsoft applications only), put a tick in the box 'Get meeting requests'
  21. If you receive File Attachments, put a tick in the box 'Get file attachments'
  22. Click [Finish]
  23. A message may appear asking if you wish to enable resolving names against an online address book. Click [No]
  24. Click [Compose]
  25. Place a tick in the box 'Keep copy of sent mail in Sent folder' (the palmtop will now keep a copy of all mail sent)
  26. Click [Delete]
  27. In the box 'Empty deleted items:', ensure that the option 'On connect/disconnect' is selected
  28. Click [OK] (at the top of the screen)
  29. Close Inbox (X at the top of the screen)

F) Connecting to the Internet

  1. Double-click the icon 'Internet Explorer'
  2. Type in any address (e.g. http://www.hp.com/jornada) in the address bar at the top of the screen
  3. Press ENTER (on your keyboard)
  4. The Dial-Up Connection box will appear. Click [Connect]
The palmtop will now dial and connect to the Internet, bringing up the page you requested.

G) Collecting E-mail

  1. Double-click the icon 'Inbox'
  2. Click [Services] [Connect]
  3. The Dial-Up Connection box will appear. Click [Connect]

The palmtop will now dial and connect to the Internet, and then send/receive all e-mails. Once completed, the link to the Internet will be disconnected automatically.

H) Disconnecting from the Internet

  1. Double-click the icon of the PC-Phone-Jornada, displayed in the taskbar at the bottom-right of the screen
  2. Click [Disconnect]
