The problems in logging on to Compuserve
(classic) are first that the initial log-on dialogue with Compuserve’s
computer is carried out in 7-bit code, which Windows CE sees as garbled because
it uses 8-bit code. The solution is
to log-on manually – ugly but it works. The
second problem is that in order to use Compuserve’s POP mail system you need a
second password – which must be different from your log-on password, and not
all users know this.
Setting up Compuserve on the Jornada 720
You’ll need to know:
-
your Compuserve numerical user name (the format
is nnnnnn,nnn);
-
your usual log-on password;
-
your POP mail server password (this must be
different from your log-on password, and must contain at least two numbers –
to set this up, <go>
>NPX-92 from your standard Compuserve PC CIM software and follow
the instructions).
1. To set up the log-on
-
Touch HP Dialup.
-
Touch Service Provider, then New.
-
Enter the name of the service provider (e.g., Compuserve), then touch
next.
-
Enter User name (nnnnnnn, nnn). Do not check either box or enter a password. Then touch
next.
-
Enter the usual Compuserve phone number (for the UK it’s 0845 080 1000). Then touch
next.
-
Select the modem type you want to use. Then touch TCP/IP.
-
Check Service-assigned IP address. Check Use software compression and also check
Use IP header compression.
-
Make sure that Server-assigned address is not checked.
-
Enter into Primary DNS 149-174-211-5. Enter into Secondary DNS
149-174-213-5.
-
Make sure that Primary and Secondary WINS are empty, and that Use SLIP is not checked. Touch
OK.
-
Touch Modem settings. Check Use terminal window after dialing. Make sure the other two boxes are not checked. Touch
OK.
-
Touch next, then save.
2. To set up the email account
- Touch Inbox from the mail menu. Touch Services,
Options, Add.
- Enter Compuserve as the Service name and make sure that the
Service type is set to POP3 Mail. Touch OK.
- Enter into Connection: Compuserve. Enter into POP3
Host: pop.compuserve.com. Enter into User ID your numerical user name,
nnnnnn, nnn. Enter into SMTP host for sending mail: smtp.compuserve.com. Enter into
Return address your usual email address (e.g. myname@compuserve.com). Make sure that
Password, the Save password checkbox, and Domain are all
empty. Touch next.
- Check Send using MIME format and (if you want) the
Only display messages from the last nn days box. Touch next. Touch
Finish.
That completes set-up!
Using Compuserve

Logging-on
(This makes a connection to the Internet
using Compserve as the ISP)
-
Connect the Jornada to a phone line, or line up the IR ports of the Jornada and mobile phone.
-
Touch HP Dialup.

After a short time the terminal screen should appear. Press <enter>.
-

At the prompt U er_ D [2]
carefully type (once again ignoring what appears on the screen, and using your
numerical account name) nnnnnnn,nnn/NOINT/PPP:CISPPP then press <enter>.
[3]
-
At the prompt P wor [4] carefully type in your normal Compuserve log-on password and then press <enter>.
-
You will get a line of so of rubbish, a short pause, then more rubbish.
Touch OK (top right) to close the terminal.
-
The HP Dialup dialog box should now say “connected”.
Touch Hide if you like.
You can now open Internet Explorer,
or Inbox to send and receive emails.
Using Email
-
After logging-on, as above - open Inbox.
-
Touch Services and make sure Compuserve has a dot next to
it – if it doesn’t, touch it.
-
Touch Connect.
-
You will be prompted for your Service Password – note that it
needs your POP Email password, and not your log-on password.
Do not check the box to save the password.
-
You can now use email in the usual way.
If you want to disconnect without leaving Inbox, touch Services,
then touch Connect again.
-
Quitting Inbox closes the email server automatically, but does not
disconnect from Compuserve.
NOTE
that you need to close the connection to Compuserve manually when you
have finished a session. Double-touch the HP Dialup icon (bottom left of the
screen) to bring up the dialog box, then touch Disconnect.
[1] That’s a garbled version of “host name”
[2] That’s a garbled version of “User ID”
[3] If you make a mistake, press <enter> and at the renewed prompt, try again.
[4] Guess this one yourself!
